Visions of the Other: when Portugal and Brazil meet [Conference by Ângela Carvalho]

April 29th, 15:00 at Portuguese Language Center at TSU (TSU building II, room 203)

In this conference, Ângela Carvalho aims to explore Portugal-Brazil connections from a perspective of otherness, or “visions of the Other”. Working with authentic materials, from the “Carta do Achamento do Brasil” (letter to the Portuguese King about first reaching the land that became Brazil, 16th century) to contemporary Brazilian jokes about Portuguese people, the focus of the conference will be on presenting and reflecting upon gazes and preconceptions of the Other, as well as analysing some real differences between Portuguese and Brazilian: their way of speaking.
